IP Unity secures strategic investment from TELUS Ventures

Companies' shared commitments to advanced IP service solutions key to funding relationship

Milpitas, Calif. and Vancouver, B.C. — December 15, 2004— IP Unity, the market leader in IP services for blended networks, has announced a strategic investment from TELUS Ventures. This funding comes as TELUS, the largest telecommunications company in Western Canada and second largest in Canada, expands deployment of an IP Unity media server to enhance its IP One telephony service in Ontario and Quebec, offering business customers unified voice mail and email messaging features from a single mailbox.

IP Unity provides voicemail and messaging technology for IP One, TELUS' Voice over IP-based voice, messaging and conferencing phone system sold to eastern Canadian businesses. Launched in the fourth quarter of 2003, IP One made TELUS Canada's first telecommunications provider to launch carrier-grade hosted and managed Internet Protocol telephone service.

"IP Unity excels at providing user-friendly services on blended networks that run both Internet and standard phone service, creating a perfect strategic fit with TELUS Ventures' mandate to invest in emerging technology gaps and solutions," says Mark Schnarr, TELUS executive vice president, Corporate Development. "This investment will advance IP Unity's product development, in turn strengthening TELUS IP One and enabling us to continue offering our customers robust, leading-edge products and services."

"TELUS Ventures' priority of investing in the convergence of data, voice, IP and wireless is highly synergistic with our mission and results," stated IP Unity CEO and chairman Arun Sobti. "From day one, IP Unity has developed and delivered converged data and voice solutions over IP, and in the last year has moved into wireline-wireless convergence, as well. We are particularly pleased to have TELUS' network deployment validate our 'many services over one platform' strategy, in addition to being one of TELUS Ventures' five new investments this year."

TELUS Ventures manages TELUS' venture capital fund, targeting emerging technology start-up businesses and ventures consistent with TELUS' strategy to exploit the convergence of data, voice, IP and wireless. Since 2001, TELUS Ventures has helped grow emerging businesses by investing almost $60 million in a total of 18 companies.
